O rings are used to block a path through which a liquid or gas could otherwise escape. The o ring is inserted into a groove to hold it in place before being compressed between two surfaces.

Fluorosilicone, also known as FVMQ, is a high-end elastomer that is widely used in the aerospace industry. Fluorosilicone is also known by the trade names FE, Elastosil, Silastic FSR, and FSE.

Specifications of Fluorosilicone O-Rings

Temperature Range

The effective temperature range of Fluorosilicone O-rings is -73°C (-100°F) to +220°C (+428°F).

The high-temperature limit in the fluid list is more conservative in some fuels and oils because fluid temperatures approaching 200°C (390°F) may degrade the fluid, producing acids that attack fluorosilicone O-rings.

General Suitability

These materials are generally recommended for static applications only due to their low tear strength, high friction, and limited abrasion resistance. There are also fluorosilicones with high tear strength. Some of these compounds are more resistant to compression set than others.

Preferred Environment of Usage

O-rings made of fluorosilicone are resistant to oxidizing chemicals, animal and vegetable oils, fuels, aromatic and chlorinated solvents. In addition, they are resistant to diluted alkalies, diester oils, aliphatic and aromatic fluorocarbons, silicone oil, toluene, benzene, ozone, and oxidative environments.

When brake fluids, ketones, hydrazine, aldehydes, amines, and ketones come into contact with fluorosilicone O-rings, they degrade. It is also abrasion-resistant.

Environmental Properties

Fluorosilicone (FVMQ) is a silicone rubber that is stable at high temperatures and can withstand harsh weather conditions and ozone.

Fluorosilicone O-rings have poor abrasion resistance, limited physical strength, and high friction characteristics due to which fluorosilicone is recommended for static applications only, not dynamic.

Fluorosilicone O-Rings are commonly used in Fuel Systems and Aerospace applications. Despite being primarily used in Aerospace, Fluorosilicone is becoming a more popular material for a broader range of sealing applications due to its excellent fuel resistance and high-temperature stability.
